Jules Claretie

Born: Dec. 3, 1840 - Limoges, France

Died: Dec. 23, 1913 - Paris, France

Educated at the College Chaptal and the Lycee Bonaparte in Paris, Claretie began a career as a journalist writing for Diogene, La France, Figaro and others. In 1871 he ran unsuccessfully for the National Assembly and after that concentrated on his writing. He became a prominent historian, novelist and critic. In 1885 he became a director of the Comedie Francaise and in 1888 was elected to the French Academy. His works include Pierelle, History of a Village (1863), Mademoiselle Cachemire (1867), Les Muscadins (1874), History of the Revolution (1875, 5 vols.), Le Regimente de Champagne (1877), Prince Zilah (1884), Journees de Vacances (1887), Puyjoli (1890), L'Accusateur (1897), Shakespeare and Moliere (1900), Therese (1907) and Which Is My Husband? (1911).
