Joaquin Miller *

a.k.a. Cincinnatus Heine Miller

Author Code: AJQM

Born: Sep. 8, 1837 - Liberty, Indiana, USA

Died: Feb. 17, 1913 - Oakland, California, USA

After a childhood spent in Indiana and Oregon, Miller became the ultimate adventurer in a variety of jobs that included Pony Express rider, cook, lawyer, judge and even horse thief. After spending a number of years in California, he returned to Oregon and, in 1864, was elected judge of Grant County. He ran for the Oregon State Supreme Court, but was defeated and began traveling for a number of years, spending time in England, where he published Pacific Poems in 1871. Later that year he published the extremely popular Songs of the Sierras, which made him a celebrity in London. After brief stays in Italy and Brazil, Miller returned to America in 1874 and began publishing regularly. In addition to poetry, he produced a number of plays, novels, short stories and non-fictional works. In 1887, he purchased seventy-five acres of land near Oakland, California where he built a home which became his base for the remainder of his life. In 1900, Miller went to China to cover the Boxer Rebellion for the Hearst newspapers. For the remainder of his life his writing diminished. His other works include Songs of the Sun-Lands (1873), The Ship in the Desert (1875), The One Fall Woman (1876), Songs of Italy (1878), Two Babes of the Wood (1880), Shadows of Shasta (1881), The Silent Man (1883), Songs of the Mexican Seas (1887), The Building of the City Beautiful (1893), Songs of the Soul (1896), As It Was in the Beginning (1903) and his autobiography Overland in a Covered Wagon (1930 Posthumous).
