Charles Egbert Craddock *

Born: Jan. 24, 1850 - Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA

Died: Jul. 23, 1922 - Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA

The daughter of a successful Nashville lawyer, Murfree was educated at Chegary Institute. She spent a number of years in St. Louis before returning to Murfreesboro (named after her great-grandfather) in 1890 where she spent the remainder of her life. In the 1870's she adopted the pseudonym Charles Egbert Craddock and contributed stories to Appleton's Journal and Atlantic Monthly. Her work is important in the study of the local color of Appalachia and the Tennessee post-Civil War period. Her works include In the Tennessee Mountains (1884), Where the Battle Was Fought (1884), The Prophet of the Great Smoky Mountains (1885), In the Clouds (1886), Abner Holden's Bound Boy (1890), His Vanished Star (1894), The Champion (1902), The Frontiersman (1904), The Amulet (1906), The Raid of the Guerilla and Other Stories (1912) and The Story of Duciehurst (1914).
