Rene Bazin

a.k.a. Rene-Francois-Nicholas-Marie Bazin, Bernard Seigny *

Author Code: FRBX

Born: Dec. 26, 1853 - Angers, France

Died: Jul. 20, 1932 - Paris, France

Educated at Angers and Paris, Bazin began his career as a professor of law at the Catholic University of Angers. He began to contribute sketches of provincial life to Parisian journals during the 1880's and in 1884, published his first book, Stephanette. In 1888, he published The Ink Stain (Une tache d'encre), which won a prize from the French Academy and established his literary reputation. He traveled to Italy and Spain and wrote a number of successful travel books including Sicile (1892) and Terre d'Espagne (1896). His The Italians of To-day (1904), was very popular with the English-speaking public. Today, Bazin is considered a minor French literary figure. Nevertheless, he often captured the atmosphere of provincial life. He was elected to the French Academy in 1904. His other works include Les Noellet (1890), La Sarcelle Bleue (1892), Humble Amour (1894), Donatienne (1903), Memoires d'une Vielle Fille (1908), Recits de Temps de Guerre (1919) and Les Nouveaux Oberle (1919).
