Ezra Pound

a.k.a. Ezra Weston Loomis Pound

Author Code: AEZP

Born: Oct. 30, 1885 - Hailey, Idaho, USA

Died: Nov. 1, 1972 - Venice, Italy

Educated at the University of Pennsylvania and Hamilton College where he received an M.A. in Romances philology in 1905, Pound initially taught at Wabash College. In 1908, he traveled to Venice where he spent several months before settling in London where he published his first book of poems, A Luna Spento. In 1914, he married Dorothy Shakespear, an artist. Pound became close friends with W.B. Yeats, who he considered to be the greatest living poet and spent some time working as his secretary. The war destroyed Pounds' faith in modern civilization and he left London for Paris in 1920. In 1924, he moved to Rapallo, Italy and developed a strong interest in fascism and Mussolini. In 1939, he returned to America briefly, but returned to Italy because of family reasons. At the outbreak of war, Pound voiced his political sympathies for Mussolini through newspaper articles, pamphlets and radio broadcasts. When Mussolini was finally deposed, Pound was arrested and brought back to the U.S. to face charges of treason. A Federal jury found him insane and he spent 12 years in a mental institution. When he was finally released in 1958, he declared "America is a lunatic asylum" and returned to Italy where he remained until his death. Pound played a very important role in the modernist movement in literature and influenced many poets and writers. He was also a gifted translator and introduced many Chinese and Japanese works to the English-speaking public. His Pisan Cantos (1948) won the first Bollingen Prize from the Library of Congress. Pound's works include Canzoni (1911), Ripostes (1912), The Fourth Canto (1919), Umbra (1920), Exile (1927), ABC of Economics (1933), Homage to Sixtus Propertius (1934), Seventy Cantos (1950) and Thrones (1959).
