Ernest Dowson

a.k.a. Ernest Christopher Dowson

Author Code: EECD

Born: Aug. 2, 1867 - Lea, Kent, England

Died: Feb. 23, 1900 - Catford, London, England

Educated at Queen's College, Oxford, Dowson left before obtaining his degree and worked in his father's business in East London. He became a member of the Rhymers' Club and began contributing to various literary magazines. In 1893, he collaborated with Arthur Moore on A Comedy of Masks, which was not very successful at the time. Dowson's father had died in 1894 from tuberculosis and his mother committed suicide shortly thereafter. Dowson became an alcoholic and sank into depression. In 1895, he published Dilemmas, a selection of short stories and followed in 1896 with Verses. He fell in love with a 12-year old girl, but when she married another in 1897, Dowson was despondent. He traveled to France where he worked for a time as a translator. Returning to England, he again collaborated with Moore on the novel Adrian Rome (1899). This was also unsuccessful and Dowson continued his downward spiral. The writer Robert Sherrard found Dowson in a stupor and took him to his home in Catford where he died a few weeks later, presumably from tuberculosis, alcoholism, or a combination of the two. His other works included Pierrot of the Minute (1897) and Decorations (1899).
