Frederika Bremer

a.k.a. Fredrika Bremer

Author Code: NFBX

Born: Aug. 17, 1801 - Abo (Turko), Finland

Died: Dec. 31, 1865 - Arsta, Stockholm, Sweden

Primarily educated at home in Sweden, Bremer traveled extensively in Europe. The death of her father left her with sufficient means to concentrate on writing. Her first success came in 1829 with the publication of The H--- Family, a domestic novel which was very popular both in Sweden and abroad. In her later years, Bremer became an active force in promoting women's rights. She spent 1849 to 1851 traveling throughout America, becoming the first woman to observe the US Congress in session and meeting many of the most important literary figures of the day such as Longfellow, Hawthorne, Emerson and Lowell. On her return to Sweden, she published Homes in the New World (1853), her impressions of what she had experienced, presented in the form of letters. Her other works include The President's Daughter (1834), The Home (1839), The Neighbors (1842), Hertha (1856) and Father and Daughter (1858).
