Emile Souvestre

Author Code: FESV

Born: Apr. 15, 1806 - Morlaix, France

Died: Jul. 5, 1854 - Paris, France

Educated at Pontivy college and the University at Rennes where he studied law, Souvestre took a variety of jobs, including journalist, schoolmaster and bookseller's assistant, while devoting himself to literature. In 1828, he published Les Siege de Missolonghi, a drama which was a complete failure. He obtained a local newspaper in Morlaix and was subsequently appointed as a professor in Brest and later in Mulhouse. In 1836, he contributed some sketches of life in Brittany to Revue des Deux Mondes and these were very successful. He became the editor of La Revue de Paris. His first novel, L'Echelle de Femmes, was also very successful and established Souvestre in French literary circles. In 1848, he became professor of the school of administration which he held until 1853. His other works include L'Oncle Baptiste (1842), Pierre Landais (1843), Le Foyce Breton (1844), An "Attic Philosopher" (1850), Confessions d'un Ouvrier (1851), Recits et Souvenirs (1853) and Causeries Historiques et Litteraires (1854).
