Ernest Poole

Author Code: AEPX

Born: Jan. 23, 1880 - Chicago, Illinois, USA

Died: Jan. 10, 1950 - Franconia, New Hampshire, USA

Educated at Princeton University, Poole graduated in 1902 and began working as a journalist. He performed research for Sinclair Lewis on The Jungle and this helped to convince him that he should produce his own novel. In 1906, he published his first, The Voice in the Street, documenting the poverty of the Lower East Side of New York City. He became a correspondent for the Saturday Evening Post and worked in Europe prior to and during WWI. In 1917, he spent some time in Russia for The New Republic, reporting on the revolution. Later that year, he published His Family, which was awarded the first Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1918. His best work was undoubtedly The Harbor, set in New York's waterfront. His other works include His Second Wife (1918), The Dark People: Russia's Crisis (1919), Beggar's Gold (1921), Millions (1922), The Avalanche (1924), The Hunter's Moon (1925), Destroyer (1931), Great Winds (1933), Bridge: My Own Story (1940) and Great White Hills of New Hampshire (1946).
